If we can learn anything from Hai’s story, it’s that God orchestrates the events of our lives to reveal truth and the path of freedom. Eventually, Hai discovered that Jesus offers more than he ever thought possible.
Here are a few takeaways from Hai’s journey that might help clarify our spiritual journey to truth, freedom, and joy.
In vulnerability and loneliness, Jesus steps in – not as a concept, but as a living Savior. Christianity teaches that God is not distant. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” In contrast, Buddhism emphasizes detachment from desire to escape suffering. Christianity offers something entirely different: not escape, but a Person who enters our suffering to redeem it. As Tim Keller said, “Jesus lost all his glory so that we could be clothed in it. He was shut out so we could get access.”
The video reveals how real peace came not through self-effort or meditation, but through surrender to Jesus. Buddhism often teaches that enlightenment is achieved through self-discipline and inner awakening. Christianity flips that. Grace is not earned—it’s received, because of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross and His resurrection – never to die again.
As Jesus says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Trusting Jesus means admitting our weakness and depending on Him completely.
Take it from this firsthand testimony of a young woman who discovered Jesus after growing up Buddhist, “Every other religion is a give and take. Buddhism says, ‘Be a good person, and you will be reincarnated into a better life.’ And even Muslims say, ‘pray five times and your sins will be washed away’. But Jesus says, ‘Come as you are, and I will wash you, and God’s grace will change everything.”’ According to Crossexamined.org, ‘Ultimately, the practices of Buddhism are unattainable. This is precisely why Jesus came.”
Hai’s decision to follow Jesus began a whole new beginning. The difference is a new heart, not just a new mindset. Romans 12:2 urges us, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Buddhism focuses on self as the path to transcendence; Christianity proclaims that transformation comes from the Holy Spirit, not from within ourselves. The Christian life is not about detaching from desire—it’s about redirecting desire toward the only One who can fulfill it.
The beauty of Christianity is not in self-mastery but in surrender. Jesus doesn’t ask us to rise above suffering by our own strength; He offers Himself as the way, the truth, and the life. Unlike Buddhism, which seeks freedom through detachment, Christianity offers freedom through relationship. We are not trying to reach God—we are receiving a God who came down to reach us.
If you sense that Jesus is calling to you and showing His love to you, consider praying this prayer,
Jesus, you are the Son of God, and I am beginning to think you love me because of your sacrifice on the cross. Continue to show yourself to me. I ask you to be my Savior and my Lord. I am sorry for living for myself, and I am choosing to follow you now. Come and make me new.
In Jesus name, Amen
